Igor Butorsky is a Russian / Ukrainian-born fitness instructor
and nutrition specialist who emigrated to the United States in 1980 during his early childhood, at the height of the cold war. After living through many years of harsh, socialistic strife and economic famine under the Iron
Curtain, Igor's family, like so many refugees before them, saw their pilgrimage into America as their God-given saving grace. At the moment of casting their first, hopeful gaze at the Statue of Liberty, they
truly knew in their hearts that they have come to dwell upon the shores of the greatest land in the world!
For the next 26 years, Igor and his family spent their new life in The
United States residing in the cradle of liberty - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, until September of 2005, when Igor migrated southward to live in the serene beauty, warmth and hospitality of the State of Mississippi!
What Igor lends to the fitness and health field is cultural perspective and
fresh, open-minded solutions for people from all walks of life. His athleticism and sense of adventure spans all the way from his high school years, where he was selected to be the first "cosmonaut" in a
televised space-simulation for his school's American-Russian Joint Space-Flight Simulation / Science Program - called SPARC - one of the first of such rigorous programs in the United States
designed to prepare top-honor students for a possible career in the space and engineering program beyond high school graduation. Such a program implements similar testing standards that potential NASA astronauts face,
such as sustaining concentration and mobility in the harshest physical environments, being able to perform under extreme physiological and psychological stress, and incorporating a grueling 6-day per week fitness and athletic
conditioning phase that has a 98% drop-out rate due to its high-intensity protocols. These strict standards eventually result in the selection of 7 to 8 individuals from an initial entry count of several hundred
applicants. Igor happened to be 1 of those 7 to 8 selected, out of the several hundred! Although he decided to not pursue a career with NASA upon graduation, the skills and discipline which Igor acquired during training
were valuable assets as he ventured on to other career opportunities.
While he started out his college years at Drexel University of Engineering in
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Igor discovered that his natural inclination was to "work on people," rather than on machines. Later transferring to Temple University, he committed himself to his lifelong pursuit of
bettering the health and athleticism of individuals everywhere he ventured. Over the course of more than a decade, Igor has honed his experience in the fitness field by working in a diversity of positions and environments:
a Health Club Manager, a Camp Drama and Athletics Director, a Day Care Music and Activity Coordinator, and a Physical Therapy / Post-Rehabilitation Consultant. He possesses a dual Fitness and Nutrition
Associate's Diploma, is currently pursuing an Associate's Diploma in Alternative and Natural Medicine, and is qualified to incorporate a multitude of training systems and philosophies.
Igor's advice concerning the health affairs of our nation: "America
is a country that continuously endeavers to assert itself as a role model for the rest of the world, especially in terms of health conditions and the quality of life. Being as such, we cannot allow ourselves and our fellow citizens
to falter in this responsibility for maintaining our state of wellness. After all, when a nation's health begins to crumble, it brings down everything else along with it. Taking this fact into account, we must stop
throwing around blames and pointing fingers at one another while our country shows escalating signs of failure with our health and medical systems. Instead, we should draw to the sobering realization that if all of us, one by one,
make the conscious decision to practice sound fitness habits and activities, we would restore our nation to the pinnacle of wellness. And we would accomplish this task without relying so heavily on our medical services."
Writing for Total Fitness America is one of Igor Butorsky's many tributes to this very essential cause.
